August: User Login Guide
A friendly guide to getting logged in to August for the very first time and getting into your workspace with ease.
Overview
This guide walks you through how to access August securely whether you are brand new or returning. You will find steps for first time login, SSO, what to do if you cannot get into your account, and simple troubleshooting tips.
Our goal is to help you and everyone on your team log in quickly and smoothly.
First Time Login and Onboarding Steps
Your very first August login is an exciting moment. Here is what you can expect:
- You will confirm your name, your role such as Partner, Associate, Staff, or Admin, and you can optionally choose your Practice Group or Team.
- If your firm has enabled it you may see a quick onboarding walkthrough. It highlights the basics such as where to find Matters, how to upload documents, how to open the editor, and how to run a workflow.
- If needed you can link your document repositories such as DMS, SharePoint, or OneDrive or you can create or join your first Matter so you can jump right in.
Most users finish onboarding in just a few minutes and then they are all set to explore August.
Logging In With Single Sign On SSO
Many firms use SSO for authentication which makes logging in fast and secure. Here is how it works:
- Open your firm specific August login URL or the link included in your invitation email.
- Click Sign In and you will be taken to your firm's identity provider login page such as Okta, Azure AD, or Google Workspace.
- Enter your firm credentials. Your IdP may use a password, multi factor authentication, or another method.
- After successful authentication you will be redirected back to August and you will be logged in automatically.
Because SSO is managed by your firm you do not need a separate August password.
Note: If your firm uses SSO you should always log in through the correct August login link. Old or direct password methods may not work anymore.
Common Login Issues and Troubleshooting
New user never received an invite Confirm the email address, check your spam folder, and ask your admin to resend the invitation.
Login fails or page not found Check that you are using the correct firm specific August URL or subdomain. If your firm uses regional hosting such as US or EU make sure you are visiting the correct region.
SSO redirect loops or authentication failed Try clearing your browser cache and cookies. Confirm that the email you entered matches the email listed in your firm's directory. If something looks mismatched contact IT.
You were removed from firm directory or AD group Access may have been revoked. Your firm admin or IT team can restore access.
You can log in but cannot open certain documents or features These items may have restricted permissions. Ask your admin to confirm your access level.
Admin and IT: What You Should Know
If you manage August access here are the essentials:
- Configure SSO with your IdP to simplify secure login and centralize account control.
- Assign user roles such as Admin or User along with practice group or team memberships to keep permissions aligned.
- Provide a smooth onboarding experience including a welcome email and first login walkthrough.
- Run periodic permission audits to ensure only the correct users can access sensitive client or matter documents.
- Set up clear support or escalation paths so users can quickly report login or access issues.
Security and Best Practices
- Use SSO whenever possible to reduce the risk of credential misuse.
- Keep your browser updated and avoid untrusted networks when logging in.
- Use multi factor authentication if your firm supports it.
- If you use a shared device remember to log out after each session.
- Report any suspicious activity or unexpected access issues to your firm admin right away.
