Connecting Your DMS: Google Drive and SharePoint / OneDrive (for August)
Learn how to link your cloud storage systems such as Google Drive or SharePoint and OneDrive to August so you can import, access, and manage documents without manual downloads.
Note: The integration must be enabled at the workspace level by an August administrator.
Why Connect Your DMS
Integrating external document repositories with August allows you to:
- Access and work on documents directly from your existing storage without downloading files
- Preserve your firm’s folder structures and permission settings
- Use your documents immediately for drafting, redlining, search, review, and workflows
- Centralize materials inside August while maintaining your firm’s established storage methods
This makes August a unified workspace for matter based legal work without requiring teams to change how they store documents.
How to Connect Your Storage in August
You can link cloud storage when uploading a file, importing into a Matter, or through workspace settings.
Method 1: File Upload or Document Picker
- In the August web app, select Upload or Add Documents
- Choose Upload from Google Drive or Upload from SharePoint or OneDrive
- Authenticate using secure OAuth
- Grant August access to the selected files or folders
- Choose the documents you want to import
- Once imported, files appear in August and are ready for viewing, editing, and workflows
Method 2: Settings or Integrations Page
- Open August and go to Settings
- Select the Integrations tab
- Locate Google Drive or SharePoint and OneDrive
- Select Connect or Link Account and complete authentication
- Your storage will remain connected until you manually disconnect it
Optional: Automatic Folder Sync (Enterprise Feature)
Firms using SharePoint or OneDrive can set up a daily sync between a selected folder and August. The synced folder becomes an always up to date source for knowledge bases or Matter repositories.
Setup (Administrator)
- Choose or create a Knowledge Base
- Select Sync SharePoint Folder as the source
- Pick the folder to sync
- Select a sync schedule such as nightly or daily
- The folder contents will automatically import into August and update as new files are added
Important Notes
- Avoid syncing extremely large repositories
- Large scale syncs may hit performance or rate limits
Disconnecting or Resetting the Integration
If you need to remove or reauthorize access:
- Go to Settings → Integrations
- Find the connected storage
- Select Disconnect or Disable Integration
- Confirm the action
Disconnecting stops future imports, but previously imported documents remain in August according to your firm’s retention and permission settings.
Restrictions, Best Practices, and Admin Recommendations
Recommended Practices
- Use a Matter centered folder structure in your cloud storage
- Avoid syncing large shared drives or archival repositories
- For auto sync, roll out in stages to limit performance risks
Admin and Compliance Considerations
- Ensure external storage permissions transfer correctly into August
- Confirm that sync processes comply with client or regulatory confidentiality rules
- Keep records of sync schedules and who authorized access for audit purposes
Why This Integration Matters
- No disruption to existing workflows: Teams can keep storing files in Google Drive or SharePoint while working with them seamlessly in August
- Single source of truth: Connected files become part of your Matter workspace, searchable and accessible to authorized users
- Collaboration at scale: Multiple users can work from the same synchronized repository
- Efficiency and compliance: Maintain your firm’s access controls while using advanced drafting, review, and workflow features in August
