What Is a Shared Thread
When you use the Assistant in August to draft, analyze, or research, your interaction is stored as a thread. A shared thread is a read only copy of that conversation that you can share with colleagues. Recipients can view the full history of prompts, responses, attachments, and outputs, but cannot edit or continue the conversation. Shared threads allow teams to collaborate, review work, and maintain transparency.
How to Share a Thread
- Open the thread you want to share from your August chat history or Assistant sidebar
- Select the Share button near the thread title or in the thread menu
- Choose the colleagues or teams to share with
- Confirm your selection
After sharing:
- Recipients can read the entire thread as it existed at the time of sharing
- Later changes to the original thread do not update the shared version
- The shared thread is read only; recipients may view or export content based on their permissions but cannot modify it
When to Use Shared Threads
Shared threads are useful when you want to:
- Share drafts or memos created with August for team review
- Provide partners or colleagues with summaries or analysis from an Assistant workflow
- Give visibility to stakeholders without granting editing rights
- Hand off work or preserve a record before cleaning up your workspace
Shared threads support collaboration while preventing unintended changes.
Permissions and Access Control
- You may only share threads you own or have been given share rights to
- Recipients must have access to any underlying documents used in the thread, otherwise referenced content may not display
- Administrators can set firm wide policies for thread sharing, including who can share and whether exports are allowed
Managing Shared Threads
To view threads shared with you:
Open the Shared Threads or Inbox section in August.
To revoke access:
- Open the original thread
- Select Share settings
- Remove the user or team from the shared list
Once removed, access is revoked immediately.
If you delete or archive the original thread:
Recipients keep their snapshot version unless they choose to delete it.
Best Practices and Considerations
- Use shared threads for review, not editing. For collaborative drafting, use shared documents or your firm’s document management system
- Avoid sharing threads that contain privileged or confidential information unless recipients are authorized to view it
- Add a clear title or note to help recipients understand the purpose and status of the thread
- Export a thread before deleting it if you need to retain a record for compliance or audit purposes
Summary
Shared threads in August provide a simple and controlled way to distribute AI generated discussions, research outputs, summaries, and drafts. They allow teams to collaborate without granting editing access and help maintain a clear record of work and decisions.
