Using Deep Research with August

What Is Deep Research

Deep Research is August’s advanced research mode designed for thorough, multi step investigations across large sets of documents and data sources. It produces detailed, citation supported reports that combine analysis, synthesis, and structured outputs. Deep Research is ideal for complex matters that involve many documents, regulatory materials, filings, or internal records.

Deep Research moves beyond brief summaries or clause extraction. It supports fact gathering, cross document comparison, risk assessment, and comprehensive research across a wide range of materials.

When to Use Deep Research

Deep Research is best suited for work that requires:

  • Multi document or multi source synthesis across contracts, filings, memos, and regulatory materials
  • Context rich analysis that spans internal and external sources
  • High level overviews such as timelines, risk summaries, comparisons, or issue spotting
  • Citation backed outputs that reference and link to source documents

Typical scenarios include:

  • Large scale due diligence
  • Litigation fact pattern analysis
  • Regulatory or compliance mapping
  • Internal audits
  • Complex legal research across jurisdictions

How to Run Deep Research in August

  1. Open the Assistant or Research panel
  2. Select Deep Research mode
  3. Provide a focused research question or prompt, for example:
    • Summarize all change of control provisions in the attached contracts and flag unusually broad clauses
    • Prepare a compliance gap memo comparing our internal policy to the updated regulation and cite relevant sources
  4. Select the data sources you want included such as Vault documents, DMS repositories, regulatory sources, or uploaded files
  5. Select Run

Deep Research will begin an iterative process that searches, analyzes, synthesizes, and compiles results into a structured output.

When finished, you will receive:

  • A detailed summary of findings
  • Citations to source materials
  • Optional elements such as timelines, risk tables, annotated notes, or memo style summaries depending on your prompt

How Deep Research Works

Instead of running a single step search, Deep Research repeatedly identifies new relevant documents, refines its search, and expands coverage to ensure completeness.

Multi Source Analysis

Deep Research can review internal content, integrated repositories, external legal databases, and uploaded documents.

Citation and Traceability

All findings include references to the original source material to enable verification and review.

Flexible Output Formats

Outputs may include reports, summaries, tables, timelines, lists of issues, or other formats appropriate for the task.

Limitations and Considerations

  • Deep Research is not a substitute for legal judgment; review all findings in sensitive matters
  • Output quality depends on source quality; missing or outdated documents may affect results
  • Broad prompts can lead to overly general outputs; scope your request when possible
  • Large datasets may produce extensive reports that require manual review
  • Only include documents you are authorized to use and follow your firm’s confidentiality rules

Tips for Effective Deep Research

  • Start with a clear research question
  • Scope the document set and sources to avoid excess noise
  • Use internal templates or standards for risk tables or memos to shape output
  • Break very large projects into phases
  • Review citations and verify key findings before relying on them

Example: M&A Due Diligence

When reviewing a target company’s contract portfolio:

  1. Upload or link documents into a Matter
  2. Run a Deep Research prompt such as:

Extract change of control, termination, liability cap, indemnification, and key obligation clauses from all contracts and produce a consolidated risk table and summary memo

  3. Receive a structured risk table and summary memo in a short time

This approach replaces days of manual review with a faster, consistent, and thorough process.
